Let's get to know Peter Vulinovich! Peter is an author and filmmaker from Melbourne, and his short story "The Stone & The Universe" is a brilliant addition to the upcoming Up & Up Media book: MIXTAPE ONE.
What is your favourite comfort food? Burritos (spicy)
What's your all time favourite short story, and why? In Michael Ende's book 'Momo' a character called Guido tells a short story called 'The Tale of the Magic Mirror', it's fucking beautiful.
Do you brush your teeth in the shower? NO
Who are the three authors who have inspired you the most? Michael Ende, Dr. Seuss, Hayao Miyazaki - They all have an important message interwoven into their stories that challenge the way we see ourselves and the world around us.
Have you released any writing before? Tell us about it, and where can we read it. I have not, I have written and directed a short film however called 'No Cigar' you can view it on vimeo - https://vimeo.com/100565900
What does your writing space look like?
Usually my room, which changes often - I like to move around.
You're about to sit and write for the day - but first, you need to get a drink. What's your beverage of choice? Water, but not tap water, it's gotta be pure stuff. I've never written for a whole day, if I did I would probably need some whiskey.
Tell us about your home city. I was born in Melbourne but moved to Auckland, NZ when I was 7. Melbourne has always been my home however and find myself crossing the ditch often. While I wrote 'The Stone & the Universe' I was living in Brunswick, I also started writing a novel. I think the most important part of a town are the people who inhabit it, I had so many good people around me who were also creative they simply must of of rubbed off on me. I am in love with Melbourne, somehow it is a hub of progressiveness yet keeps this strong traditional energy, I call it the city of Space Wizards. Everyone who knows me knows I have a love hate relationship with Auckland, it has so much potential but the people who govern it keep fucking it up. The people in Auckland are awesome, most of my best friends are from Auckland. I love all my peoples.
What do you love about writing? Imagination. I believe the world bends to our collective imagination and the world we live in is a projection our imagination, so I live in an imaginary world and I am imaginary. This makes all of us very important and very powerful.
Usually a brand has a kind of personality about it, and you know what you're messing with when you associate with that brand. Up & Up is interesting, because it is brand new and doesn't really have an established personality yet. How do you feel about it? What do you make of all this?
Up&Up does have a personality, but it's in its infancy. Babies have a noticeable personality as soon as they come into the world, it just takes time for the baby to grow and be able to express that personality, Up&Up is the same. I am excited to see what the future holds and how Up&Up will chose to express itself, from what I have seen so far I am impressed and proud to be apart of it.
Our motto at Up & Up is "The indie punk label of publishing for the garage bands of writing." What do you make of that? I like the energy behind this, it feels gritty and real and that always appeals to me. However I think that Up&Up shouldn't sell itself short when the time comes to take on the big boys - I imagine Up&Up much like studio Ghibli in its early days and hope that it can rise to the same heights one day.
What are your hobbies?
Making movies (expensive hobby), Video games, good anime like Full Metal Alchemist, soccer, reading about mysticism, walking, traveling.
What are your long-term writing plans?
I want to finish my Novel which has the working title 'The Mountain of Prophesy', it would be cool to get this published. It's also for children but has an appeal for all ages, much like Studio Ghibli films. I want to write and direct more short films. I want to work and collaborate with other creatives. Keen to go with the flow and see where it all takes me.
What question do you wish I'd asked you?
In no particular order -
Who are my hero's? My mum and younger brother, Hayao Miyazaki.
