Murder at the Mountain Rush
This year we worked with a special guest - Rob Verhagen, local author and expert in writing historical fiction. His first novella, "Murder at the Mountain Rush" tells the story of a mysterious murder on the goldfields of historical Kinglake.
1862 and the world is changing. For Albert Nash a long career upon the mountain has allowed him to hide from the settled world below. But the gold is drying up. Desperate for a payout Nash falls in with a native tracker. Yet his hopes for a rich claim are dashed when a man is murdered at the Mountain Rush. This is the moment when the settled world lays claim to the mountain. Nash struggles to face the winds of change but in the course of deciding to what life he may turn to below he realises he is set to lose something much fairer than gold.
Written, illustrated, and published by Kinglake locals, Murder at the Mountain Rush is a celebration of the community. It is also an exploration of the history of the area. Visit Kinglake, copy in hand, and discover the beauty of the people and the place.
